You Tell Us Your Favorite Cocktail, We'll Tell You Where To Get It

Nathaniel Burbury February 19, 2019

There’s a cocktail for every occasion.

Just got off work after a long day and need to unwind? Gin and tonic - the sour of the lime mixed with the sweetness of the tonic, balanced out by the bitter juniper will leave you refreshed and not weigh you down the next morning. First morning of a long weekend? Mimosa - light, sweet and bubbly, just like the mood they invoke. The problem is, too often we end up just going to the same watering hole and never explore the other options our city has to offer. Here are six of the Cūltre team’s favorite spots to enjoy a cocktail and something each place does especially well.

The Post Office Saloon | Long Island Iced Tea

Long Island Iced Tea.jpg

The Long Island Iced Tea is definitely best enjoyed after a long week. I’ve tried them at a few different places in town but nothing tops the one I get from Kevin, the bartender at The Post Office. It comes in a tall glass and contains Triple Sec, Vodka, Tequila, Gin and White Rum, topped off by a splash of Coke. It’s sweet and strong and I can’t recommend having more than one or two. The Post Office nearly always has live music on Fridays and Saturdays and always has a fun vibe with attentive service.

Cheesecakes Unlimited | Lemon Drop

Hemingway used to write of a ritual he had with his friends on evenings out. They would start with dinner and drinks, and after a few hours of conversation and drinking they would eat dessert and drink coffee before continuing to enjoy cocktails. He was doing it right. Cheesecakes Unlimited has really phenomenal (you guessed it) cheesecake and coffee. After a good dessert and a nice cup of coffee, you have to try a Lemon Drop. It’s served in a martini glass and contains Vodka, Cointreau, freshly squeezed lemon juice, simple syrup and sugar on the rim. It’s an explosion of flavor without being overpoweringly sweet and no one does it as well as Cheesecakes.

The Squire Room | Manhattan

The Squire room has one of the coolest aesthetics in Redding. It feels like a classic, 1950’s lounge. It’s always an experience, and they make the best Manhattan in town. The trick is not too much Vermouth and authentic Luxardo Cherries instead of cheap maraschino cherries. They always use a top-shelf Bourbon or Rye. The result is always delightful and boozy.

Clearies | The Sazerac

Clearies is a Redding classic. They have a large selection of whiskeys and make fantastic drinks. My personal favorite from there is The Sazerac. It comes in a rocks glass and contains Rye Whiskey, Cognac, Absinthe, a sugar cube, a few dashes of bitters, and a lemon peel garnish. The spice of the Rye is leveled out by the sweet Cognac and a sugar cube and the Absinthe adds an exquisite aromatic element. Combined with the classy, warm environment of Clearies, you will be wanting for nothing, except maybe one more.

Vintage | Tequila Mule

Vintage used to just be a wine bar, but recently they remodeled and acquired a liquor license. They don’t have the largest selection, but they make up for it with quality service and a great atmosphere. They always have live music on the weekends and an outdoor patio. A great cocktail to start with there is the Tequila Mule. Simple and crisp. It contains Tequila, ginger beer, lime and sometimes a fresh mint garnish. It’s something you could drink all night and never get tired of, which is convenient because once you get to Vintage, you won’t want to leave.

Mosaic | Mimosa

After a long night of friends, food, and drinks there will only be one thing you want in the morning - brunch and a prerequisite of any good brunch spot is a killer mimosa. One of my favorite brunch spots is Mosaic, it’s a new and spacious spot near the river with good food, good coffee, and great mimosas. They’re just fresh squeezed orange juice and champagne - the perfect way to ease into a relaxing Saturday.

The Best Burritos of Redding

Alex Anderson February 19, 2019

Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner, burritos are always an option.

Carne Asada, Carnitas, Shrimp, Breakfast, California, Lao… they’re all different colors of a burrito rainbow. We’ve been pretty lucky here in Redding to have plenty of spots to enjoy this iconic Mexican dish. Here’s a few of our favorite spots:

El Zarape

Located off of Twin View Blvd is El Zarape Tacqueria. I stumbled upon this place in 2018 and it quickly became my go to for the perfect ‘non-coma inducing’ Carne Asada Burrito. Their steak is perfectly cooked and seasoned, and rarely do I get the chewy bits that no one like. I order with no beans to cut down on the unnecessary carbs. With a side of chips, salsa, and pickled carrots, you’ll be in heaven.

Los Gordos

Los Gordos is a definite local favorite. As an authentic Mexican Taqueria they offer a lot of different menu items, all delicious. Their burritos come in multiple different styles, with a lot of options. It’s definitely a bit hefty and will undoubtedly get your moneys worth! They have a location downtown on the corner of Pine and Shasta, and another location on the south end of Churn Creek.

Madayne Eatery & Espresso

Let’s talk breakfast. Whether you had a rough night and need a burrito to bring you out of it, or you’re on your way to work and need to grab something on the way, this place has you covered. They have 6 different breakfast burritos all under 8 dollars! Our favorites are ‘The All American’ (Egg, Potato, Smoked Bacon, Texas Aioli Sauce & Aged Cheddar) and the Norcal Denver (Egg, Potato, Bacon, Smoked Ham & Aged Cheddar). You can see their full menu on their site.

El Delicioso Burrito

Some people might stay away from a burrito place inside of a gas station, but we are not those people. We choose not to judge a burrito by its restaurant aesthetics, but instead by what’s on the inside [of the tortilla]. The Shasta Jumbo Burrito is a heaping portions of Carne Asada, sour cream, guacamole, french fries, and joy. I’m guessing they sell most of these at 20 past 4 PM, because they are the perfect cure for the munchies. It’ll sit you down and shut you up, but damn it’s good.

Redding's Best Sushi: Where to Go

Nathaniel Burbury February 19, 2019

There are some people who don’t like sushi and I feel sorry for their misguided souls.

There’s something to be said about a meal that tastes so good it should be bad for you but is still loaded with nutritional value. I love a good burger or pizza as much as the next guy but sometimes you just have to break out of the mold and go for something fresh and fantastic -- Sushi. Redding has some really phenomenal sushi establishments. I haven’t been to all of them yet, but here are a few of my personal favorites.

Tokyo Garden

Tokyo Garden was one of my first Redding sushi experiences. It’s a small family-style restaurant with friendly service and some really great food. Two must-tries from there are Pot of Gold Roll (tempura shrimp, avocado, sake, topped with spicy tuna salad, tobiko, and special sauce) and the Jackpot Roll (tempura shrimp & asparagus, avocado, topped with maguro, albacore, unagi, sake, tobiko, and special sauce). They, of course, have stellar sides and killer bento boxes if you aren’t in the mood for sushi.

Kobe Seafood & Steakhouse

Kobe is right downtown on the corner of Market and Shasta St, which means that there are plenty of options for post-dinner drinks right within walking distance. It’s a nice, modern space perfect for a date or night out with close friends. My two favorite rolls they make are The Fusion Roll (tuna, white tuna, eel, salmon, ebi, krab, hamachi & fried and topped with eel sauce, spicy mayo & tobiko) and The Zombie Roll (tuna, salmon, white fish, avocado, cream cheese, masago, mixed crab & spicy mayo) You won’t be disappointed. The Fusion Roll is a perfect balance of crispy, meaty and deliciously saucy and The Zombie is a great compliment to The Fusion with its simpler flavor pallet.

Sakura Sushi

It might not look like much from the outside, but inside it’s nothing but quality. Sakura serves traditional style sushi. If you’re looking for lots of sauce and cream cheese, you should probably go to one of the other options but if you want authentic sushi prepared by Kenji Tanaka - an extremely experienced, highly trained sushi chef, look no further. It’s a cozy place with quality rolls and good prices.

Kahunas Mongolian BBQ and Sushi

Kahunas is primarily a Mongolian BBQ restaurant but also serves really fantastic sushi. The best part? You can do bottomless sushi. Yes, you read that right. The exception is that your first roll has to be finished before you get another, which isn’t an issue at all because the rolls are so delicious. It’s a very large space with plenty of seating for the whole crew and some great beers on tap.

Poke Land

Poke Land has been my new favorite. The downfall of sushi is that it is quite pricey. Poke Land does bowls instead of rolls. Less than 13 dollars you get a massive bowl loaded with rice, meat, and all your favorite sushi sauces and toppings. You can’t beat the price and the quality is exceptional. It’s a great alternative if you want all the flavors and nutrition of sushi and don’t want to break the bank.

All in all, Redding has some great sushi options. What are your favorite spots and rolls? Let us know!
